Acts of Kindness
Small acts of kindness can go a long way. It can brighten a stranger’s day, give support to a friend in need, and build your character. Never overlook the importance of being kind, both in training and in your everyday life. There are many ways to be kind and there are just as many reasons to consider being a little kinder to those around you. Here are just a few of them.
1. Being a Good Sportsman: Supporting Opponents
Being a good sportsman means you have to win and lose graciously. It can be a little easier to be a good sportsman when you win a match, but losing can sometimes bring out the worst in us. We’re all human, and we all lose from time to time. As long as you’ve given it your best shot, there’s nothing to be embarrassed about! Remember that your opponent works hard on their matches too, so show them the support you would want. This way every match is a fun match!
2. Teamwork & Growing Together: Creating Safe Spaces
Your opponents aren’t the only ones you ought to support. Whether you’re training, working on a project, or just playing together with your friends, it’s important to make sure everyone gets heard. Sometimes you may have a good idea, but you’re too afraid to tell anyone else. Creating a safe space where everyone feels comfortable, and no one is made fun of, means you get to learn from each other and grow together.
3. Strength in Kindness: Standing Up for Your Friends
It can be tough when you’re smaller or shier than your peers. Sometimes people pick on the little guy, but we all know that’s wrong. If you see someone being mean or bullying a friend, it’s time to speak up. You can say that’s not the right thing to do, or you can tell a supervisor who can help your friends work through their problems. Whatever you decide, know that standing up for one another is the kind thing to do.
4. Self-Esteem & Feeling Good: Having a Clean Conscious
We all know that feeling you get when you do something kind for someone. It makes you feel happy and helpful, and it makes the person you’re being kind to feel good too. Simple acts of kindness can leave a big impact on people, like congratulating them when they do a good job or helping them when they’re struggling with their homework. But on the other side, hurting someone hurts you too. Having a clean conscious is an important part of staying healthy.
5. The Skills of a Future Leader
All these acts of kindness help both you and your community. Showing compassion, consideration, and care to others is how you learn to understand their perspective. Every time you see some and recognize the things they need so you can help them, it’s like walking a mile in their shoes. Taking care of your peers and contributing to your community is the first step towards becoming a good leader.
